Burglary as well seems to be persistent (I noticed fresh crowbar marks on my fire escape window the other day).

I think one of the few things Giuliani got right, and as you point out Larry with the drinking example, was the 'Broken Windows' doctrine. It's fair to say that crime is contagious, and may also be passed down from one generation to another, like the car-radio-stealing, mugging, and general mischievousness that seemed to end in NY with my generation.

When muggings, etc., start to become 'fashionable' again among young people, as they seem to be now, it's only natural that things are going to start sliding back.

Also, since the working class in general is leaving/being forced out of the city in droves, who is going to be willing to put their lives on the line, in an unpopular job, for a salary that ensures you'll never be able to live anywhere but the outer reaches of the outer boroughs?

It's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out in the next 10-20 years. I predict, with the coming increase in population (was it another million within a decade?) and as the quality of life continues to decline, this city's novelty factor is going to wear off with the suburban-at-heart, and we will see another 'white flight' in our lifetimes.Brooklyn Lovehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15274894247348240890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8774131.post-17483447775916707092008-05-03T02:55:00.000-04:002008-05-03T02:55:00.000-04:00While I don't see cops on subway cars all that reg...While I don't see cops on subway cars all that regularly, I see them on various subway platforms almost everyday while on my way to work.

I kinda doubt having four of them standing around chatting is the best use of their time though.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
